South Korea to stop gambling at internet cafes

In a report released on Thursday, the Board of Audit and Inspection of Korea held the government accountable for failing to curb illegal gaming. In a response, the government said it would step up its actions against illegal gambling.

Illegal gambling has developed in arcades and Internet cafes, after the government loosened rules to help boost its game industry in recent years. The total turnover in these outlets has been estimated at US$21 billion last year.

The inspection by the Audit Board forced nearly 9,500 arcades and 5,000 Internet cafes to be closed for illegal operations. These outlets operates games that produce gift certicates as winnings. These winnings represented cash equivalents that were much larger than what was legally permitted.
